This old school 1978 Harleuin is still truly delightful Other than my cherished Betty Neels collection I culled most Harleuins and other OSR books about 20 years ago keeping only a handful of favorites although I haven't read any of them in years This one I'm happy to say has held up well except that the hero is a chain smoker ick and I enjoyed it immenselyEleanor Ferrers name borrowedmodified from Jane Austen

Country Cousin

E so vulnerableBut then she met Edward Mansel who was too handsome wealthy and experienced to look twice at a poor parson's daughterWell why should s. By the way I think you ll have to make the effort and call me Edward for the look of the thing He lifted a brow It shouldn t be too difficult after the first time Not difficult at all said Eleanor with wide eyed innocence I once had a pet toad called Edward I m uite used to the name and giving him a bright smile she swept pastThis is a story about a country bumpkin going to visit a family who lived by the city except I don t think there was any relation as the title suggests This writing and setting almost had a Heyerish feel to it and did not fail to disappoint in entertainment value After Eleaner s love interest gets engaged to her sister her mother sends her off to her friend s family to stay with and there she meets Edward the son of said friend Automatically they are wary of each other because of H s awareness of matchmaking mama s glint in her eye and h s awareness of H s cynical playboy status Throughout the story the Hero fights for his bachelor rights and refuses to go down without a fight while at the same time getting deeply involved in heroines character The h being aware of this struggles with her growing feelings and in defense tries to repel him Between fantastic chemistry and entertaining bickering and bantering I was fully invested in their HEA I liked every one of the characters from the Hero s mother and sister to the potential OM Even the OW added just the right amount of friction I thoroughly enjoyed this author s style and sense of humor and her characters growth was paced well

He proposed but it was to her sisterAnd Eleanor was devastated because she was in love with him too Never again she vowed would she let herself becom. I found most of the characters in Jacueline Gilbert s Country Cousin horrid and I was not invested in the protagonists Happily Ever After The heroine is my least favorite kind of character a martyr who valiantly keeps her lips from uivering and remains mum and is happy to self sacrifice in order to protect and enable completely worthless people from her selfish airhead sister who ruthlessly moved in on her boyfriend regardless of hurting her feelings and then uite callously ruined her reputation because she was feeling spiteful and then expected that same sister to pull her out of horrendous debts she incurred while buying her extravagant trousseau to the rude thoughtless host s daughter who begrudgingly welcomed her into her house then proceeded to ignore and mock her as an unwanted country bumpkin stray she was forced to endureThe hero is an arrogant haughty commitment phobe manwhore who fights his attraction for the heroine with cruel and crushing words and actions and blows hot and cold with her Another detestable prototype give me an obsessed mine mine mine Alpha instead please You are asking me to believe he went into the other girl s room at nighttime after everybody else went to sleep to discuss an antiue This worldly smooth operator ladies man had NO IDEA what type of invitation he was accepting from a girl who kept throwing herself at him and was determined to break his engagement to the heroine Even if you are asking me to be dumb enough to swallow this whopper that he was extremely interested in viewing an antiue in his ex girlfriend s bedroom in the middle of the night he didn t at least wonder at the impropriety and repercussions of his actions with his purported fiance sleeping practically in the room next door Puh leeeeeeze Then when he is confronted he takes the TYPICALLY male defense mechanism of turning the tables on the righteously outraged heroine by accusing HER of pre judging him and having no faith in him He compounds that by confirming he spent the night in the ex s bed and taunting her that she must be so mad because she wished he chose her bed instead Wow what a class act He had absolutely no respect for her and to be honest she did nothing to earn respect for herselfOne of those stories where you gotta be happy that the heroine is happy with her lot He is surely going to give her lots and lots of opportunities to martyrize herself as he goes on his nighttime uests to examine Victorian snuffboxes and French vases in the bedrooms of all his girlfriends from Tirane to Timbuktu
