    Probably if you can really switch off from some critical thinking and uite a lot of common sense this might be a good read Unfortunately I found it extremely naive and was constantly frustrated by the storyline The good guy is too good he only seems to kill bad guys and has a remarkable ability to hit people once and know exactly how long

There are several issues with this book Firstly and most importantly Reznick has no character voice For the first several chapters all we get is staccato swear words and confirmation of instructions and until about half way through the book he never has a conversation of than a few lines and the lines that we do get do not show a coherent character the dialogue could be copy and pasted into the mouth of almost any character in this genre The cliched flashbacks drunk dad who was a Vietnam vet Reznick served in the military don t do nearly enough to flesh out his characterHe doesn t interact with anyone for than a few pages which often ends up with the other guy dead He drives all the way from DC to Miami with some guy in the car with him and all they ever say is let me go and then shut up This could have been an interesting relationship that could have been explored as these two are forced together for about 25ths of the book but nothing is done with it whatsoeverThe chapter where he rescues his daughter should be fraught and terrifying and edge of your seat and heart wrenching when he finds her but time is spent talking about an unused sniper rifle than about his reaction to discovering his comatose daughterThe lack of character voice makes it hard to feel sorry for Reznick and even harder to build tensionThat is not to say that Turner cannot write interesting characters My favourite character was the scientist who found a secret message in music He has a nice arc and a half decent pay off but we only get a very few chapters with himThe book also feels very episodic He s in Washington picks up a dude he was supposed to kill never develops a relationship with him Goes to another town finds his buddy dead goes to another town hands off his hostage to an old friend discovers a bad guy kills him 2 chapters laterThere is no well developed primary character conflict the only overarching conflict being stop the bomber which is resolved very unsatisfactorily in my opinion The main bad guy is revealed right at the end and is seen on in book screens only twice He gets no dialogue and is then killed in an off screen explosion that doesn t have any connection with the main characters Maddox the first supporting character we see who is predictably a traitor has a fair bit of dialogue at the start and is then largely forgotten for great portions of the book We don t get any dynamic between him and Reznick which sucks so much soul out of what could have been the primary conflict in the bookReznick does not have an arc He starts off as this super powered genius unstoppable killing machine who can extract information with breathtaking ease and with friends in extremely convenient locations and it means that there is never any tension as to whether he will achieve his goals His first sign of anything other than steely resolve and determination is not shown until 23rds of the way through the book By that point his uncertainty seems uncharacteristic ironic for a character with so few identifiable personality traitsAs for why I have called this he shrugged and sighed well the number of times people shrug and sigh in this book you would think there had been a carbon monoxide leak all over the US Maybe that will be the subject of the next book in the serious I do not plan to find out Banned in Britain responsible Meanwhile he is the only person who knows the true extent of the threat to national securityand has the stealth and determination to stop itRevised edition This edition of Hard Road includes editorial Hour of the Beast revisions.
